This Isn’t a Hospital!

My husband might be a bit of a superhero but he has rules

Theme: The Beauty

Quick Take:

  • 1 in 100: Most UK adults don’t live with and care for a parent - my husband is rare and heroic.

  • Home, not hospital: Family care can be messy and chaotic but there are things that help us survive.

  • Superhero spouse - brings a bit of beauty!

Family Care

A few weeks of health hiccups have reminded me just how much my family means to me. Private care at home is not cheap, and Milly’s savings will disappear if we’re not careful - so we try to do as much as we can as a family. Which, happily, includes my husband.

More Than 1 in 100 (and lucky me!)

According to the Office for National Statistics and the Department for Work and Pensions, roughly 1 in 100 UK adults live with and care for a parent, while about 4 in 100 care for a parent who lives elsewhere.

Co-resident care is about twice as common in South Asian families, meaning roughly 1 in 60 adults in these communities live with and care for a parent, compared with roughly 1 in 125 adults among White British households.

So yes - my husband is statistically rare. And yes, I’m fully aware I hit the jackpot: real-life superheroes do laundry, cook dinner, and keep the chaos under control!

The Husband Rulebook

Of course, even superheroes have rules:

  1. The snug is sacred. Milly is not allowed in our little reading-and-TV haven.

  2. Equipment stays put. Walking frames, perch stools, and the like are confined to Milly’s part of the home.

Respecting these boundaries is a small price to pay for having someone so unusual - and wonderful - by my side in this caregiving adventure.
