The World on my Side
When a good day reminds me how hard Milly’s days are
Theme: The Beauty
Quick Take
Feeling successful changes how we see the world.
Encouragement helps difficult days feel more manageable.
Small wins matter more than we realise.
When Things Fall Into Place
Some days, everything seems to click into place. The obstacles disappear, the right people appear at the right moment, and suddenly the world feels full of possibility.
I had a day like that yesterday and I came home feeling energised, optimistic and excited about what might come next.
The Paint Quest
I’m being brave - for me - and moving away from white paint throughout the house and introducing some colour. Not just any colour, though - the exact right colour.
I took a drawer to be colour matched, much to my husband’s irritation. In his view, at least one of the eight tester pots I’d already bought had to be close enough, and I was being a little over the top.
When I arrived, the paint desk was closed. Typical.
Just as I was resigning myself to defeat, a wonderful member of staff appeared. She scanned my drawer, looked at the previous tester pots and declared, "No, these aren't right at all. You're not being OTT."
Vindication at last.
I came home with a new tester pot and, finally, my colour!
A Small Miracle in a Battery
Later, my handheld fan stopped working. The battery was an odd, non-standard type and, after searching unsuccessfully, I was ready to give up.
On a whim, I popped into a phone accessory shop.
The man behind the counter couldn't have been more helpful. He disappeared into the back room, rummaged through boxes and drawers, and after much searching emerged triumphantly with...
...the right battery.
The Unexpected Bargain
Then I happened to pass a favourite shop that is sadly closing down.
I only had a few minutes before I needed to head home, but I popped in for a quick look.
There, almost immediately, I found a birthday present for my daughter. It was absolutely perfect - exactly the sort of thing she would love, but something I would never normally buy at full price.
And it was half price.
Feeling Tickety-Boo
How powerful I felt!
How capable I felt.
How optimistic I felt.
I felt tickety-boo - an expression my mother used all the time.
Everything had worked out. The right paint. The right battery. The perfect gift.
Nothing earth-shattering. Just a series of small victories that left me feeling as though the world was on my side.
A Different Perspective
And then I realised something.
If none of those things had fallen into place, how different I would have felt.
Fed up. Deflated. Less certain about what to do next.
For me, those feelings would have lasted a few hours, perhaps a day.
For Milly, they are there every hour of every day.
And that's a thought.
Milly does so well, considering.
It reminds me how important it is to help her feel successful in everything she does. No wonder praise, encouragement, brightness and optimism help to give her a sense of calm. When so much of her world feels difficult and uncertain, those small moments of success matter more than I sometimes realise.
